Why we use Tallow in skincare?
For centuries, tallow has been valued for its ability to moisturize, protect, and support healthy-looking skin. At Rooted Clinical Botanics, we carefully source and render grass-fed beef suet tallow because of its unique composition and compatibility with the skin. By combining this traditional ingredient with modern formulation science, we create thoughtfully crafted skincare designed to nourish the skin barrier and promote lasting hydration.
Why We Choose Suet Rendered Grass-Fed Tallow
We believe that exceptional skincare begins with exceptional ingredients. Our grass-fed suet beef tallow is rendered multiple times and filtered by our trusted supplier and we carefully rendered it again and for some products we infuse it with calendula flower, rose petals, and chamomile, we do this process slowly to preserve the lipids while creating a clean, nourishing base for our formulations. Every ingredient we select is chosen with purpose to support healthy-looking skin.

The Fatty Acids Found in Tallow
-
This fatty acids matter because...
The outermost layer of your skin (the stratum corneum) is made of lipids (fats) that help prevent water loss and protect against bacteria, allergens, and environmental damage. While topical fatty acids don't become part of your skin permanently, they can support the skin barrier, improve moisturization, and reduce water loss.
-
Oleic Acid (~40-50%)
A moisturizing fatty acid also found naturally in the skin’s surface lipids. It helps skin feel softer and more conditioned.
-
Palmitic Acid (~24-30%)
A fatty acid present in the skin's natural lipid structure that contributes to a smooth, nourishin skin feel.
-
Stearic Acid (~15-25%)
Helps reinforce the skin barrier, reduces moisture loss, and contributes to a rich, protective feel.
-
Palmitoleic Acid (Omega-7) (~2–6%)
Found naturally in youthful skin sebum; helps condition the skin and may support barrier function.
-
Linoleic Acid (Omega-6) (~2–5%)
Essential fatty acid that helps maintain the skin barrier. Lower levels have been associated with acne-prone skin.
-
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) (small amounts)
Has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies, although topical human evidence is still limited.

Suet-Rendered Tallow
Suet is the dense, nutrient-rich fat found around a cow's kidneys and loins. When gently heated and filtered through the rendering process, it becomes tallow, but not just any tallow, it is a purified, shelf-stable fat with low moisture content. Compared with mixed beef fat trimmings, suet is naturally lower in connective tissue and impurities, making it a preferred starting material for producing clean, consistent tallow used in traditional skincare and soap making.
Can we use Tallow only?
-
At Rooted Clinical Botanics, we believe great skincare loving products cannot be built around one single ingredient.
Grass-fed tallow provides an exceptional foundation, but science and modern formulations allows us to pair it with carefully selected botanical oils, antioxidants, humectants, and skin-conditioning ingredients that complement one another.
Each formula is intentionally designed so every ingredient has a purpose, whether it's hydration, improving texture, enhancing stability, providing faster absorption or providing antioxidant protection.
Rather than chasing trends, we focus on balanced formulations that work together to create products you'll enjoy using every day.

Tallow, Rendered Animal Fat, and Its Biocompatibility With Skin (2024)
Read articleThis scoping review found that tallow is rich in skin compatible fatty acids, primarily oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, which may help support the skin barrier and improve skin hydration when applied topically. The review concluded that tallow has moisturizing properties and may benefit conditions such as dry skin, dermatitis, psoriasis, and wound healing. However, the authors also noted that some ingredients, including pumpkin seed oil and linoleic acid, demonstrated superior moisturizing effects in comparative studies. Overall, the researchers concluded that while topical tallow shows promising potential as a skincare ingredient, additional high-quality research is needed to better understand its effectiveness, safety across different skin types, and long-term use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is suet rendered tallow suitable for all skin types?
Suet rendered grass-fed tallow is widely used in skincare because of its emollient properties and skin-compatible lipids. Every person's skin is unique, so we recommend patch testing any new skincare product before regular use.
Why does Rooted Clinical Botanics use suet grass-fed tallow?
We use suet grass-fed tallow because it provides a rich, nourishing foundation that pairs exceptionally well with carefully selected botanical ingredients. Rather than relying on a single ingredient, we formulate products where every ingredient serves a purpose for your skin.
Does tallow clog pores?
There isn't a single answer that applies to everyone. Skin responds differently depending on the individual and the complete formula of the product you use. That's why we combine tallow with lightweight oils and other carefully selected ingredients to create balanced products for your skin.
Is your tallow ethically sourced?
Yes. We source high-quality suet grass-fed beef tallow from farmers around the U.S., reliable suppliers that value responsible farming and quality ingredients.
Why doesn't Rooted Clinical Botanics use only tallow on their products?
We believe great skincare comes from thoughtful formulation. While tallow is an excellent foundation, ingredients such as squalane, jojoba oil, calendula, manuka honey, niacinamide and botanical extracts each contribute unique properties that complement one another to help your skin achieve better results.
